14. The Ultimate Wedding Playlist | Melbourne Wedding Celebrant Tips

Music is the "soundtrack" to your memories. Think about it—you can hear a song from ten years ago and be instantly transported back to a specific moment. It triggers emotions faster than almost anything else!

You might eventually forget exactly what was on the menu or the specific shade of the roses, but you and your guests will never forget the feeling of the room when your favorite song came on.

I’m Leeann Cook, your Melbourne Civil Celebrant and Online Wedding Planner, and today we are building your wedding soundtrack. From the first walk-in to the final goodbye, let’s make sure every milestone has the perfect beat for your Melbourne wedding.

1. The Ceremony Milestones: The "Big Three"

In a ceremony, there are three key musical moments you need to nail to keep the energy flowing.

  • The Processional (The Walk-In): This is the "big reveal." Choose a song that gives you "the feels." A big misconception is that it has to be slow and traditional. If a high-energy pop song or a classic rock anthem is meaningful to you, use it! It just needs to represent your love.

  • The Signing: While we’re doing the official paperwork, there’s usually a gap of about 5 to 8 minutes. You need two songs here. Choose something upbeat but chill—what I call "happy background" music. It keeps the energy from dipping while the guests wait for the "I dos" to be official.

  • The Recessional (The Walk-Out): This is your "Yay, we did it!" song. It should be high energy, loud, and pure joy. As your marriage celebrant, I love this part—it’s the track that officially kicks off the party!

2. The Reception Gap: Atmosphere vs. Energy

Once the ceremony is over, your guests head to the cocktail hour. I call this the "Reception Gap," and it’s where the vibe is set for the evening.

My biggest advice? Keep it "Acoustic/Chill." You want music that fills the space but allows people to actually talk. There is nothing worse than guests having to scream over a heavy bass line while they’re trying to eat a canapé. Whether you've booked a Melbourne wedding DJ or a live acoustic duo, think "Coffee House" vibes or jazzy covers of your favorite hits.

When you move into dinner, keep that volume low and steady. You want the music to be a backdrop to the laughter and the clinking of glasses, not the main event. Save the heavy hitters for the dance floor!

3. The Grand Finale: End on a High Note

Don't let the night just fizzle out. You want your wedding to end on a massive high note with a "Last Dance" that no one will forget.

Pick a song that everyone knows the lyrics to—think classic anthems or "guilty pleasure" hits. You want that giant group-hug moment on the dance floor where everyone is singing at the top of their lungs.

Give your DJ a "Must Play" list, but also a "DO NOT Play" list. If you absolutely loathe the Macarena or The Nutbush, put it in writing! As an online wedding planner, I always remind couples: it’s your party, and you shouldn't have to hear a song that makes you want to hide in the bathroom.

Music is the heartbeat of your wedding. It’s what brings people together and sets the tone for every single second of your day. Choose songs that make you want to move, cry, and celebrate!
